Assignment Editor

Duties

• Serves as the first level of contact in the newsroom, fielding calls from the general public, public relations directors and publicists pitching stories and concerned citizens calling in for updates on breaking news or with news tips.
• Collects story ideas, pours through press releases, researches a variety of topics and keeps abreast of stories from all sources, including wire services, government agencies, corporations and community groups.
• Compiles notes on story ideas for potential future coverage.
• Vets news sources and makes the daily schedule of story assignments for reporters and photographers.

Experience Level

• A bachelor's degree in mass communications, journalism or related field is required.
• Prior experience working in print or broadcast journalism is preferred.
