Chief Engineer

Another title for this position can be Director of Engineering and Information Technology.

Duties

  • Oversees a staff of engineers, as well as the physical maintenance of the facility.
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs equipment, including computer workstations and the IT network, at smaller stations. If employed at larger stations, there would be technical staff to assist with these duties.
  • Purchases equipment and maintains relationships with vendors.
  • Manages and controls expenditures.
  • Monitors the station's signal for strength and quality and ensures compliance with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations.

Experience Level

  • An associate degree or the equivalent from a two-year technical school is required.
  • Minimum of three years of related experience and/or training or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • FCC general radiotelephone operator license (PG) or The Society of Business Engineers (SBE) certification is required.

At certain stations, the chief engineer (CE) effectively is the "director of engineering and information technology." The CE manages the technical team, which includes oversight of the IT infrastructure. Larger stations may also have an assistant chief engineer who would be more hands-on with the staff, while the chief is engaged more with the administrative side and financial aspects.
