Broadcast Engineer

Duties

  • Analyzes trouble areas and designs solutions, working in tandem with broadcast technicians to apply the fixes, providing supervisory oversight to the work.
  • Maintains the digital broadcasting electronic systems and related equipment needed for successful signal transmission and broadcasting. Such equipment would include transmitters, switchers, transceivers, audio equipment, studio consoles and more.
  • Conducts routine inspections and diagnostic testing of key broadcast equipment, responding to outages and other problems that may arise.
  • Provides training that might be needed, especially on software required to work new equipment, which may include networking switches, workstations, monitors and more.

Qualifications

  • Grasp of industry software and IT.
  • Demonstrated track record working with broadcasting equipment along with knowledge of linear and non-linear systems.
  • Requires interaction with a number of departments, so good communications skills in addition to technical expertise are paramount.

Experience Level

  • At a minimum, an associate degree from a two-year technologically related program and at least two-plus years working in an engineering capacity, preferably at a radio or television studio.
  • May also include special engineering/IT software certifications.

Broadcast engineers and broadcast technicians have many job overlaps, but a BSE has more advanced training and/or on-the-job experience. The job of radio staff engineer might also be titled radio engineer; broadcast transmission engineer; or broadcast maintenance engineer. Broadcast engineers are problem-solvers who can take complex concepts and theories and apply it to developing solutions that work in the real world.
